Humidity, heat and long drives to events all take a toll. Here is how Nebraska players keep a custom playmat flat, clean and legal all season.
A custom playmat is the one piece of gear that sits under every game you play, so it takes more punishment than anything else in your bag. Nebraska conditions make a difference too, and a mat that lives in a car boot through Nebraska summers ages faster than one that gets rolled and stored properly. This is the routine we recommend to players across Omaha, Lincoln and Bellevue.
Roll it, never fold it
A folded mat creases along the fold line and the crease never fully relaxes, which means cards catch on it during a match. Roll the mat with the printed surface facing outward so the rubber backing compresses instead of the print, and keep the roll loose rather than tight.
If you travel between events in Omaha and Lincoln, a hard tube or a mat strap costs very little and removes the temptation to fold it into a backpack.
Cleaning without wrecking the print
- Wipe with a barely damp microfibre cloth, working from the centre outward.
- Use plain water first. If you need soap, use a single drop of dish soap and rinse the cloth twice.
- Never use alcohol wipes, bleach or a scrubbing sponge on a printed surface.
- Blot spills instantly. Sugar in drinks is what leaves a sticky patch, not the liquid itself.
- Dry flat, face up, away from direct sun. A radiator or a hot car will curl the edges permanently.
Nebraska weather is part of the problem
Damp storage is the main cause of that musty smell mats pick up, and it happens fastest where the air is humid. Store the mat somewhere with airflow rather than sealed inside a plastic bag, and let it dry completely after an outdoor or garden-table game before rolling it away.
Heat is the other one. A mat left on a dashboard between rounds can soften enough to take on the shape of whatever it is resting against, so keep it in the shade or inside the venue with you.
When to replace, and when a second mat is cheaper
Stitched edges fraying, a permanently curled corner or a shiny worn patch where your hand rests all mean the mat is past its best. Most players get more life out of two mats than one: keep a good mat for events and a knockabout mat for kitchen table games and testing.
