Sleeve Care 101: Making Custom Sleeves Last a Season
Custom sleeves are an investment. A few small habits keep them tournament legal and sharp through hundreds of shuffles.
Sleeves fail in predictable ways: split corners, clouded fronts and marked backs. Every one of those is avoidable with a bit of routine.
Shuffle on a soft surface
Bare tables are what split corners. Shuffling on a playmat spreads the impact and roughly doubles the life of a set.
Watch for marked backs
- Rotate the deck's sleeves as a whole set rather than replacing single sleeves, so wear stays even.
- Any sleeve with a nick, scratch or bend on the back can be read as a marked card at an event. Replace it immediately.
- Keep hands dry. Oils cloud the print faster than shuffling does.
Storage
Store sleeved decks upright in a rigid box rather than lying loose in a bag. Pressure on one edge is what causes the long-term bow that makes a deck hard to shuffle.
